The Mother's Body

The changes in my body have been accompanied by almost every kind of feeling: joy, anxiety, many varieties of pain and discomfort, wonder, alarm, confusion, and excitement, to name a few. I have been hyper-attentive to it, for the most part, which makes it seethe with meaning. It always seems to be telling me something, but, of course, it has its own language, it moves and changes on its own terms, and I am a clumsy interpreter. I have been very happy to have Will by my side most every day of this adventure to watch, listen, and care for me. The pregnancy part is coming to a close. Burrito is expected to emerge in less than two weeks... of course, when s/he arrives may be only the beginning of her or his defiance. (Pictures taken at 22, 27, and 38 weeks.)

Imagining Burrito's Body

These are the first (technologically produced) images of the body that has come to be known as "Burrito." It had been changing and growing for 19-21 weeks at this point in early April. The sonogram was an absolute thrill--Will and I laughed almost the whole time. We had an oddly maniacal response.

Ethics Vp39s

...we live in continuous change, and...as we change for the better or worse, we are called happy or unhappy... In this life, then, we strive especially that the infant's body may change (as much as its nature allows and assists) into another, capable of a great many things and related to a mind very much conscious of itself, of God, and of things.
- B. de Spinoza
